Give back this spring, with a forest of trees

April 29, 2011, East Gwillimbury
– On Thursday May 5, the Regional Municipality of York, Trees Ontario and local partners will be hosting a free community tree planting event in East Gwillimbury with local York Region employees, community groups and members of the general public.

Hosted by the Regional Municipality of York and Trees Ontario, this Annual Community Planting Event is designed to bring York Region employees, their families and friends and members of the public together to take part in an afternoon of tree planting activity, promoting community engagement and environmental action. The event aims to engage communities in local reforestation projects and build profile around the importance of trees, shade and green urban spaces.

Participant Information:

Events are rain or shine. To participate in the event, all you need to bring is a shovel, gardening gloves and lots of energy! Trees Ontario

Trees Ontario, working with its partners, is the largest, not-for-profit tree planting partnership in North America. It is committed to the re-greening of Ontario through a range of tree planting activities.

The goal of Trees Ontario is to restore the province’s tree planting capacity, especially throughout southern Ontario on private lands, by providing funding and planning support for its tree planting partners. These include local Conservation Authorities, Ontario Stewardship Councils, municipal governments and community volunteer groups.

This year, with its partners, Trees Ontario will plant over 3 million trees. Its goal is to support the planting of 10 million trees per year by 2015. Help us save the environment. One tree at a time.

The Regional Municipality of York

Through the Greening Strategy, York Region partners with groups like Trees Ontario to help increase forest cover and protect a healthy natural heritage system for future generations.  Since adopting the Greening Strategy in 2001, York Region and its partners have planted more than 800,000 trees and shrubs across the Region.  Through education, tree planting, and other land securement tools, York Region continues to put policy into action by achieving on-the-ground environmental results.
