Trees Ontario's Letter to the Editor in response to
National Post's February 1, 2011 article:
February 1, 2011, Greater Toronto Area - Trees Ontario and its partners have an environmental "win" to add to the findings of the Living City Report Card released earlier this week. The not-for-profit organization is working with its tree planting partners across the province, including the Toronto Region Conservation Authority (TRCA) and York Region, to plant close to 3 million trees a year.
Since 2004, Trees Ontario and its 65 provincial partners have planted over 10 million trees across the province, with approximately 2,000 landowners. As part of this total, Trees Ontario has supported the planting of 383,000 trees with the TRCA and York Region. The organization is expecting to help fund the planting of another 100,000 trees in the GTA this spring. Maps of tree planting sites can be found here.
Trees Ontario, the largest not-for-profit tree planting partnership in North America, is helping to rebuild and grow afforestation programs in the province. The organization is the lead delivery agent for the Ontario government’s 50 Million Tree Program, which aims to plant 50 million trees by 2020.
Environmental Commissioner, Gordon Miller’s annual report released last fall stated that "a billion more trees are needed in southern Ontario in order to achieve 30 per cent forest cover and a healthy ecosystem."
In efforts to help reach this provincial target, Trees Ontario’s goal is to support the planting of 10 million trees a year by 2015. Success is dependent on contributions from government, individuals, corporations and small businesses.
Trees Ontario, with its partners, is proud to be planting an environmental ‘win’ for residents and landowners in the GTA.
