An Update From Trees Ontario
March 2008 - Workshops Gain Popularity as Result of 50 Million Tree Program
Trees Ontario and its partners recently wrapped up a successful tree planting workshop series. The workshops offered local landowners information on how to plant trees and apply for funding to reduce tree planting costs. The 12 sessions held across the province brought in over 575 attendees.
Part of this increased attendance is due to the introduction of a new incentive program recently announced by the Ministry of Natural Resources (MNR), called the 50 Million Tree Program. As part of its commitment to reduce the effects of climate change, the Ontario government has joined the United Nations Billion Tree Program and plans to plant 50 million trees by 2020, the single largest commitment so far to the UN program.
"This is the single largest tree planting commitment we have seen in Ontario in a very long time," said Michael Scott. "This program will allow our partners to rejuvenate the tree planting infrastructure, and will provide a significant subsidy to eligible property owners - $1.25 a tree. Other incentive programs available to help landowners reduce costs range from $0.10/tree to $0.50/tree, depending on the size of their property and the number of trees planted," he explained.

50 Million Tree Program Will Help Plant 2 Million Trees This Spring
Trees Ontario and its partner agencies are ramping up to plant approximately 2 million trees in Southern Ontario this spring as part of Phase 1 of the MNR’s 50 Million Tree Program.
“With the support of our partners we continue to increase our overall tree planting capacity,” said Michael Scott. “Enhancing our infrastructure is essential to increasing overall planting numbers and reaching our goal of putting 50 million trees in the ground by 2020.”
Other Events and Workshops
Over the next few months, Trees Ontario will be out in the community hosting and attending various planting events and activities. Remember to visit the Trees Ontario exhibit at the Green Living Show at the Direct Energy Centre in Toronto on April 25-27. Stay tuned to the website for updates.
A series of free technical stock workshops is currently being offered by Trees Ontario to help support program delivery and capacity building. The workshops provide advanced level training in tree planting planning, stock handling and planting techniques to improve survival rates, growth, and operational efficiencies. These sessions are open to partners, consultants and forestry experts. OPFA Continuing Education credits will be assigned.
Also, mark your calendars for the free tree seed workshops being offered in June to all partner agencies and volunteers. With the urgent need to replenish supplies of tree seed, this workshop will help improve seed collection efficiencies and restore tree seed inventories.
