City of Pembroke Announces Funding from Trees Canada and Trees Ontario Green Streets Grant
Pembroke, ON - December 18, 2007 City of Pembroke Mayor Ed Jacyno is proud to announce that Pembroke City Council, in recognizing the importance of urban forests and the global effort to stop the warming of our planet, felt it was necessary and prudent to replace the many large trees that had been destroyed over the past several years by a number of vicious weather-related occurrences. The City, in its effort to bring its streets and parks back to their former beauty, applied for grant dollars through the Green Streets Canada program to help defray the cost of purchasing and planting new larger calliper trees on City streets.
Pembroke was one of 16 communities across Canada awarded funding in 2007. “In partnership with Tree Canada and Trees Ontario we are happy to announce the planting of 22 large calliper sized trees on various boulevards and in parklands throughout the City at a cost of over $11,000,” announced Mayor Jacyno.
On behalf of Pembroke City Council and all the citizens of Pembroke, Mayor Jacyno thanked Tree Canada and Trees Ontario for their $5,500.00 grant and the support received.
“It is through programs like this that we will revitalize our local community's environment and the global community, at large,” said Mayor Jacyno.
"Tree Canada is proud of its history of helping over 350 communities like Pembroke renew their urban forests through the Green Streets Canada program", said Michael Rosen, President of Tree Canada . Jim McCready, Program Forester for Tree Canada, was in Pembroke representing Tree Canada and made the presentation of the funding cheque. "Mayor Jacyno and his staff should be congratulated in helping restore this important community and environmental feature," said Mr. McCready.
"We are pleased to support the City's efforts in this urban forest project," said Michael Scott, President and C.E.O. of Trees Ontario. "This is a vital part of the work we are doing with tree planting partners across Ontario. Ontario must rebuild its aging forests and expand its tree planting capacity. Pembroke was one of the communities contributing to the over 3 million trees that were planted across Ontario in 2007. We are working hard with our partners to increase this number significantly over the next several years," he said.
