Georgian College’s University Partnership Centre
Celebrates 1000 Students with 1000 Trees
Laurentian at Georgian program marks milestone with donation to Trees Ontario
BARRIE, SIMCOE COUNTY – OCTOBER 10, 2008 – The University Partnership Centre (UPC) at Georgian College celebrated the milestone of 1000 students in the Laurentian at Georgian program this week with a contribution to Trees Ontario that will see 1000 trees planted in 2009.
The occasion was also marked by the planting of a ceremonial ‘1st tree’ of the 1000 outside the UPC’s brand new facility on the grounds of Georgian College’s Barrie campus.
The Laurentian at Georgian partnership began with just 55 students and has grown to over 1000 in just a few years.
“The college now reaches out to our students and their families in ways we could never have imagined, even as recently as 10 years ago,” said Sharon Bate, the college’s Board of Governors’ vice-chairperson.
“The University Partnership Centre at Georgian College, by working with a select set of partner universities, shows a commitment to offering innovative education opportunities for Georgian College students,” said Michael Scott, Trees Ontario President and CEO.
“By partnering with Trees Ontario, the UPC demonstrates a commitment to help fight climate change and increase Ontario’s forested landscape by supporting our tree planting initiatives with our local planting agencies.”
At the college’s request, the trees resulting from the contribution are slated to be planted in the Barrie/Orillia area, in the spring of 2009.
Trees Ontario is proud to be part of commemorating this milestone in the Laurentian at Georgian program.
