Trees Ontario Helps Build Green Legacy for 2010 G8 Summit

April 13, 2010 – Trees Ontario is happy to announce projects it will carry out with the Department of Foreign Affairs and International Trade to ensure the 2010 G8 Summit in Huntsville, Ontario leaves a green legacy.

This joint effort will see Trees Ontario, along with its local tree planting agency partners, Muskoka Heritage Foundation and Westwind Forest Stewardship Inc., manage the planting of 6,000 native tree seedlings on a site outside of Huntsville.

A group of community and student volunteers began the planting project on April 24 by putting 500 red pine seedlings into the ground. This project will support forest and watershed health in Muskoka throughout the life of the trees.

In addition to this, eight ceremonial trees will be planted in a prominent location in the Town of Huntsville to commemorate the 2010 G8 Summit being held at the Deerhurst Resort in Huntsville early this summer.

Representatives of the Department of Foreign Affairs and International Trade, including Sanjeev Chowdhury (left), joined Huntsville Mayor Claude Doughty, the Honourable Tony Clement, Member of Parliament for Parry Sound -Muskoka and student volunteers from Huntsville High School to plant the first of 500 red pines on April 24, 2010. In all, some 6,000 trees will be planted on the site on behalf of delegates who will attend the G8 Leaders' Summit in Huntsville this June.
