Help Commemorate 2010 G8 Summit with Trees for Huntsville's River Mill Park

HUNTSVILLE, ON — On June 5, 2010, the Honourable Tony Clement, Minister of Industry and Member of Parliament for Parry Sound-Muskoka, joined the Mayor of Huntsville at River Mill Park to plant eight maple trees on behalf of the leaders of each G8 country. A bronze plaque explaining the significance of the trees was also unveiled.

“These maple trees are a great addition to River Mill Park and a meaningful commemoration of the 2010 G8 Leaders’ Summit,” said Minister Clement. “They contribute to the positive environmental legacy of the Summit while making the park an even more inviting feature of downtown Huntsville.”

Leaving a positive environmental legacy is part of the Government’s strategy to reduce the impact of Summit operations. The tree planting is a joint effort of the Department of Foreign Affairs and International Trade’s Summits Management Office, Trees Ontario, and the Town of Huntsville. This project complements the reforestation, on behalf of all G8 delegates, of a site west of Huntsville with 6,000 recently planted pine trees.

The G8 brings together the leaders of Canada, France, Germany, Italy, Japan, Russia, the United Kingdom and the United States of America, along with the European Union, to address pressing international challenges that require coordinated responses, such as in the areas of development, and international peace and security.
