Trees Ontario Partners with Sun Media's Newspaper in Education Program

April 1, 2009 - In conjunction with Trees Ontario, the Sun Media Newspaper in Education (NIE) program wants to help schools across Ontario purchase a tree sapling to plant on Earth Day 2009. Join their eco-friendly digital NIE program and move from stacks of newspaper in your class, to the paper-less Sun on your computer screens or interactive classroom whiteboards.

By using a vast range of teacher's curriculum guides designed for students of all ages, the Sun Media NIE program is an outstanding classroom tool for highlighting current events, local news, global and environmental issues, sports and entertainment. NIE is a program designed to utilize the hard copy newspaper or the electronic version as if they were actual textbooks in an educational setting.

What are the E-benefits to you and your students?

  • Rich graphics with embedded links, video & on-demand audio
  • Interactive table of contents & advanced search capability
  • Back issue archives to help with current events and history lesson planning
  • Article sharing though email & interactive student Blogging
  • Ecologically friendly

When your class registers with the Sun Media NIE program you will receive a teacher's guide at no cost, courtesy of Sun Media's Vacation Donation fund. The teacher guides are ready-made lesson plans that utilize the newspaper as the "living textbook" in the classroom. Plus, the first 300 schools in Ontario that register will receive a voucher with a value of up to $30 from Trees Ontario, to purchase one native tree sapling for planting at your school on Earth Day - April 22, 2009.

How do you sign up?

Teachers should contact Sun Media directly at: Torsun.nie@sunmedia.ca.

Simply tell them how many students are in your class; give them a designated email address and Sun Media will do the rest.
