Trees Ontario Promotes MNR's 50 Million Tree Program at Canadian International Farm Show - Landowner Interest High
February 2009 - From February 3-5, 2009 over 20,000 members of the Agricultural community converged on Toronto's International Centre for the Canadian International Farm Show, the largest indoor exhibition of farm products and equipment in Canada, and Trees Ontario was there. Somerville Seedlings generously provided booth space for Trees Ontario to display their information and be present at the show. This provided an excellent opportunity to reach out to the farming community in Ontario and promote the Ministry of Natural Resource's 50 Million Tree Program, and the reception to the information was tremendous. There were many landowners who wished to be contacted immediately with more information on how they could take advantage of the 50 Million subsidy program, many staying at the booth for up to 20 minutes to talk with Trees Ontario staff.
Trees Ontario is a partner in the Ontario Ministry of Natural Resources' 50 Million Tree Program, part of the United Nations Billion Tree Campaign. The United Nations' goal is to plant one billion trees worldwide each year. Ontario has committed to plant 50 million trees by 2020. The 50 Million Tree Program is designed to significantly reduce the costs to landowners of large-scale tree planting and thereby increase the number of trees planted across the province, by providing a subsidy of $1.25 per seedling. To be eligible to take part in the 50 Million Tree program, private landowners must have at least five acres of productive land in southern Ontario and must maintain the trees that are planted.
