Ontarians Dig In to Turn the Province Green on CAA & Trees Ontario Community Planting Weekend

Surprise Mom this Mother’s Day with a forest of trees

Ontario, April 19, 2011 – On Mother’s Day weekend, May 7 & 8, CAA South Central Ontario, Trees Ontario and local planting partners will be hosting five free community tree planting events across the province.

Hosted by CAA South Central Ontario and Trees Ontario, this Annual Community Planting Weekend is designed to bring families, volunteers and CAA members together to take part in a 1/2 day tree planting activity, promoting community engagement and environmental action. The event aims to engage communities in local reforestation projects and build profile around the importance of trees, shade and green urban spaces.

Participant Information:

Events are rain or shine. To participate in an event, all you need to bring is a shovel, gardening gloves and lots of energy! CAA South Central Ontario and Trees Ontario will supply the rest - the trees, forestry specialists, mulch and snacks. Participants are encouraged to wear appropriate clothing, sturdy shoes (steel toe if possible), a hat and sunscreen. Parking will be available.

Families are invited to celebrate Mother’s Day weekend in a unique way by planting trees to create their own local family legacy.

Media are also invited to join the tutorials and tree planting events across the province.

Trees Ontario

Trees Ontario, working with its partners, is the largest, not-for-profit tree planting partnership in North America. It is committed to the re-greening of Ontario through a range of tree planting activities.

The goal of Trees Ontario is to restore the province’s tree planting capacity, especially throughout southern Ontario on private lands, by providing funding and planning support for its tree planting partners. These include local Conservation Authorities, Ontario Stewardship Councils, municipal governments and community volunteer groups.

This year, with its partners, Trees Ontario will plant over 3 million trees. Its goal is to support the planting of 10 million trees per year by 2015. Help us save the environment. One tree at a time.
