ONTARIO GETS GREENER WITH MORE THAN 1,000 NEW TREES AT WEST DEANE PARK

Hon. Donna Cansfield and Local Residents Help Ontario Reach Goal to Plant 50 Million Trees By 2020

TORONTO – April 14, 2009 – Every tree counts especially when one healthy mature tree releases enough oxygen back in the atmosphere to support two human beings for one year. Trees not only transform parks, they help to reduce greenhouse gases, protect and provide food and shelter for songbirds and other wildlife. On Saturday, April 18, GTA residents are invited to take part in the annual South Mimico Community Planting which contributes to Ontario’s 50 Million Tree Program. Ontario’s commitment is the single largest commitment made to date to the United Nations Plant for the Planet: Billion Tree Campaign which hopes to plant at least one billion trees per year worldwide.

“Every tree planted helps us in our battle against climate change,” said Hon. Donna Cansfield, Minister of Natural Resources. “We are proud of our partnership with Trees Ontario as we take steps to make Ontario a greener, healthier place to live.”

 Through the combined efforts of Toronto and Region Conservation (TRCA), South Mimico Environmental Action Group, City of Toronto and Trees Ontario, more than 1,000 native trees and shrubs will be planted at West Deane Park. The public is invited to participate in interactive displays and a workshop to learn about the importance of native trees and shrubs, birds and the water quality of Mimico Creek.

“Trees Ontario is very pleased to be partnering with Minister Cansfield, TRCA the City of Toronto and community members to host this urban tree planting event, which further supports the Ontario government’s commitment to plant 50 Million Trees by 2020,” said Michael Scott, President and CEO, Trees Ontario.

This year’s event takes place at West Deane Park, a City of Toronto park, which is approximately a 2km valley reach along the main branch of Mimico Creek with its northern boundary just south of Eglinton Ave. and southern boundary just north of Burnhamthorpe.  

“This Spring’s event promises to be a lot of fun and I invite everyone to come out, meet your neighbours and dig in,” said Mark Taylor, Chair of the South Mimico Environmental Community Group. “West Deane is a terrific park and this is a great opportunity to plant some trees, learn some earth friendly care tips and make a difference to the green space you live near.”

“Planting a tree is a good way to start celebrating Earth Day and to make a contribution to the natural environment,” said Gerri Lynn O’Conner, Chair, Toronto and Region Conservation., an organization which has more than 50 years of planting and forest management experience. “The goal of this community event is to plant more trees, promote the importance of the urban forest and restore the health of the Mimico Creek watershed for future generations to enjoy.”

WHAT:  FREE Tree Planting Workshop and Community Planting Event. Activities include Tree Planting, Park Clean Up, and workshops on native trees and shrubs and local wildlife

WHEN: Saturday, April 18 from 10 a.m. – 1 p.m.

10:00 - event begins with tree planting and the various other stations
10:30 am - workshop from Trees Ontario
11:15 am - workshop on local wildlife
12:00 official ceremony with tree planting

Trees Ontario
Trees Ontario, working with its partners, is the largest, not-for-profit tree planting agency in North America. It is committed to the re-greening of Ontario through a range of tree planting activities.
