Each year, Adjala Central Public School’s Student Council creates a fundraising campaign and designates a charitable organization as the recipient. This year, events included dances, candy-grams and guessing contests.

“The students were very excited about doing their part to improve the future for children by helping to protect the environment,” commented Principal Ruth Montgomery. “They researched to find a not-for-profit organization where the money would benefit our local region or province. Trees Ontario became the charity of choice as it met all criteria and would provide a renewable resource.”

One healthy mature tree releases enough oxygen back in the atmosphere to support two human beings for one year. Trees create shade to offset summer heat, provide food and habitat for wildlife, boost the health of watersheds and reduce soil erosion.

“The contribution from Adjala Central Public School, which will see Trees Ontario put 280 trees in the ground, shows that Ontario’s youth are just as concerned about the environment as we are,” noted Trees Ontario President and CEO, Michael Scott. “With the school’s motto ‘where the seeds of success are sown’, Adjala Central Public School seems a perfect fit to help Trees Ontario reach its goals. We are delighted, and want to thank the students for their important contribution.”

Adjala Central Public School has an award-winning environmental stewardship program, with accolades on local and provincial levels for recycling and waste diversion. The Green Team runs the school’s recycling program and actively seeks ways to achieve environmental sustainability. This fall, the school will pilot an organic waste program for the County of Simcoe.
