Robert H. Keen, RPF

CEO

Rob In March 2011, Rob Keen assumed the role of CEO of Trees Ontario. Rob Keen is a Registered Professional Forester (RPF) who has run his own forestry consultant business since his graduation from the University of Toronto in 1982. He has been involved with many facets of the forestry industry, primarily in the Great Lake St. Lawrence forest region. Rob has provided forestry services to landowners, developed forest management plans on Crown and private land, conducted wood supply and feasibility studies, led forest audits for the Forest Stewardship Council and Ontario Ministry of Natural Resources (MNR) and fulfilled silvicultural contracts with the MNR.

Rob has been a member of the Ontario Professional Foresters Association since 1985, where he served as Vice President for two terms. He was a Director and Chair of the Algonquin Forestry Authority, Director for Maple Leaves Forever and Director on the Board of the Ontario Forestry Association for 10 years, and recently assumed the role of President for the organization.

In 2002, Rob prepared the first business plan for Trees Ontario and in 2003, he joined the organization as Program Manager. In 2009 he took on the role as Director of Operations and was responsible for the planning and implementation of Trees Ontario's tree planting programs, sustaining its 65+ planting partnerships and the organization's overall financial planning. Rob is now leading Trees Ontario, its staff and overall organizational programs to sustain and generate new revenues and partnerships to support and achieve its regreening mandate.

Al Corlett

Program Manager

Al Al Corlett is a Registered Professional Forester with 33 years experience both in the Ministry of Natural Resources and more recently, as a forest management consultant. Much of his career has been spent in the Great Lakes / St. Lawrence Forest Region. During his period in the Ministry of Natural Resources, Al worked as an Area Forester in several districts, and as a Forestry Specialist in the Southern Science and Information Section, co-authoring many of the guidelines used in forest management planning and implementation, including A Silvicultural Guide for the Tolerant Hardwood Forest in Ontario and the Ontario Tree Marking Guide. He has trained forest workers in the principles of silviculture, forest regeneration approaches, careful logging techniques and certification as Tree Markers.

Shelley McKay

Marketing and Communications Manager

Shelley Shelley brings more than 15 years experience in marketing and public relations. She has recently served as vice president on the Board of Directors of Toronto's Harbourfront Community Centre, Co-Chair of Communications for the Junior League for Toronto's Showhouse, the premier fundraiser for Sunnybrook's Women and Babies program, and fundraising committee for the Opening Night Gala of HotDocs. Previously, Shelley served as VP Advertising & Sponsorship for International Association of Business Communicators (IABC) and as President of Sales & Marketing Executives Association, as well as on the Boards of the Advertising Federation, Special Libraries Association, and the Wildlife Rehabilitation. Her accomplishments include: establishing an anti-graffiti pilot program in St. Paul, MN; pressuring the US Federal government to lift US sanctions against Libya to allow settlement distribution to Lockerbie bombing victims' families; and lobbying to change state law to allow household-moving corporate donation.

Brooke McClelland

Business Development Officer

Brooke A graduate of Wilfrid Laurier University, Brooke holds an Honours BA in Communications, as well as a Post Graduate Certificate in Sport & Event Marketing from George Brown College.

In May 2009, Brooke joined Trees Ontario as Administrative Assistant, bringing with her relevant experience in the environmental non-profit sector, and a background in event management and communications. After a brief time in Australia in the fall of 2010, Brooke returned to Trees Ontario as Event Coordinator. She is supporting the coordination of various fundraising and planting events, conferences and other organizational activities.

Prior to joining Trees Ontario, Brooke worked at Earth Rangers as the Events Coordinator, organizing all in-house and donor recognition events. Her past experience also includes her time at the Beaches International Jazz Festival where she was the Marketing and Events Coordinator, aiding in the implementation of the festival, which included: marketing, communications, and volunteer coordination. Brooke has also been actively involved as a volunteer for various other organizations including: The Canadian Cancer Society, Hospital for Sick Children and the Daily Bread Food Bank.

Azadeh Chobak

Communications Officer

Azadeh Azadeh Chobak holds an Honours B.Sc. in Psychology from the University of Toronto as well as a post-graduate certificate in Corporate Communications from Seneca College.

Azadeh joined Trees Ontario in July 2010 as the Communications Coordinator where she supports the coordination of events, conferences and activities. In addition, she helps to manage media relations and advertising efforts as well as Trees Ontario's various communications vehicles.

Azadeh's previous roles include: Junior TV editor at Rogers Television, Research Assistant at the Centre for Addiction and Mental Health, Communications Coordinator at the Association of Early Childhood Educators Ontario as well as several volunteer and internship positions with Marlik Marketing Group, Draft Reading Series, the Association for Canadian Educational Resources and the Toronto International Film Festival.

Ruth Hall

Administrative Coordinator

Ruth Ruth Hall comes from an eclectic background of finance, administration and yoga. She moved to Canada from the UK in 1998, and began her Canadian career working for the Guelph & Wellington Credit Union, a non-profit co-op, as Funds Administrator. Since then she has explored other areas of the financial and business world working for companies such as State Street Bank and CNA Canada.

Feeling the need to find more meaning to her life and career, she left the world of corporations in 2004 and went to India to live in an ashram and explore the philosophy and teachings of Yoga. Upon her return from India, she worked with an entrepreneur as her assistant, helping to grow a small, online company that offered ongoing education to Yoga teachers.

In addition, Ruth has voluntary experience with both Guelph and Toronto Humane Societies, the Redwood, the Sivananda Yoga Vedanta Centre, the Salvation Army and the Sathya Sai Baba Centre of Toronto. She is dedicated to giving back to the earth and to her society.

Ruth joined the Trees Ontario team, as Administrative Coordinator, in October, 2010.

Brian Swaile

Seed and Stock Coordinator

Brian Brian is a graduate of Sir Sanford Fleming College in Lindsay where he received a diploma in Forestry. He worked with the Department of Lands and Forest and Ministry of Natural Resources (MNR) for 30 years. Brian was involved in forestry and park divisions in the early years of his career and then spent the last 20 years as the Manager of OMNR’s Ontario Tree Seed Plant in Angus. Here, Brian gained a sound knowledge working with tree seed in fields of forecasting, collecting, processing, storage and proper handling methods. Since leaving this position Brian has been involved in conducting forecasting and certified seed collection workshops across Southern Ontario and consulting to various agencies and associations, such as Trees Ontario.

Mike Walsh

Program for Local Afforestation Network Training (PLANT) Project Manager

Mike has worked for Ministry of Natural Resources for 36 years in Algonquin Park and Bracebridge, with an initial focus on forest management, including tree marking, forest inventory, tree planting and cut inspections on logging sites.  In the mid 1980’s, Mike accepted the role of Senior Forest Technician for Crown Land and in 1996 became the MNR Stewardship Coordinator for the Parry Sound/Muskoka Stewardship Network. 

Mike is a founding member of the Ontario Tree Marking Certification Program, educating forest workers in sustainable forest management on crown and private land. He has organized and instructed at over 50 Stewardship Series workshops for landowners and others interested in managing the natural resources on their properties, has authored extension notes and contributed to two silvicultural guides currently used in Ontario.
